DASH is a POSIX-compliant implementation of /bin/sh that aims to be as small as possible. It does this without sacrificing speed where possible. In fact, it is significantly faster than bash (the GNU Bourne-Again SHell) for most tasks.
User discussion and development of DASH take place on the mailing list - everyone is welcome to post bug reports, feature requests, comments, and patches to dash@vger.kernel.org - no subscription required (so please don't cull the CC list). To subscribe to the list, send an email to dash+subscribe@vger.kernel.org. The mailing list archives are available at lore.kernel.org and other archival sites.
DASH is a direct descendant of the NetBSD version of ash (the Almquist SHell). I ported it to Linux in early 1997. It was renamed to DASH in 2002.
